I simply want a tri-colored LED that's RED/BLUE/GREEN, a little PWM control will take care of the rest. ;-) Does anyone know why they are not commonplace yet?

All's LED is the flashing type and is just an "attention getter"; its flashing and sequencing are built in, so other colors are not available. Tri-color RGB LEDs are that not hard to find, but they cost more than standard LEDs. SuperBrightLeds.com is one source. Cost: $2 each. Not bad.
The non-flashing LEDs have multiple leads in non-standard spacings. One approach is a single cathode and separate anodes for R, G, and B.
