line following robot

Hi I hope someone may be able to help me . I have a small line following robot kit ,that uses 3 IR sensors to detech the black tape , it works great ,but for what I need the tape is to wide . The tape is about 3/4 inch or 20mm wide & I need to go down to about 1/16 inch or

1.5 mm . The three sensors are about 1/2 inch or 12mm apart , if i move the sensors closer together will it change the line width. I hope to use it for a profile cutter for my plasma cutter. thank you Allan

If you are following an edge, why does the width of the tape matter ? This sounds like a very crude sort of line following - probably it is bouncing from one edge to the other ? Depending on how the line following is implemented, altering it to work from a single edge may be quite simple.

You could be in for BIG problems trying to run simple electronics next to a plasma cutter - they generate a lot of electrical noise. You will almost certainly need something that is properly screened.

have fun ! Dave
