You will need to provide a lot more detail about what you are hoping to do. Sensing something 1inch away is quite a different task from something 1 mile away. The purpose of your efforts are also important to know. Have you done any searches on the internet?

You don't need to reinvent the wheel but study reversed engineered circuits. See
