We flew PMC! Of course there were spectacular prangs.

I took votes this year from the RSOs and LCOs, plus all the craftsmanship judges. It looked like a 3 way split until I wandered in one room with 4 of the judges in one place. 3 of them voted for one model, which started a runaway. Second place was Charlie Sykos, but the runaway winner was larry Rice. He had fins on his battlestar in one axis, but nothing in the other. In static display, I'd picked it as second most likely to prang.

The only one worse, Adam Elliott's Millenium Falcon was not allowed to fly by the RSO. It had NO FINS AT ALL, and weighed almost 1500g, powered by a cluster of 6 C6-3s. They did let him fly is cardboard boilerplate onthe sport range. 4 C6s and less than half the weight. Not stable at all, and way underpowered. I just hope he doesn't bring the PMC version to a NIRA launch like the one this Sunday...

Worth noting: Launch Crue has won 5 section titles and 5 BMWQF awards. Chad was the only Crue member nominated this year. But it wouldn't be a NARAM without a Crue nomination. This year they won neither the section championship nor the BMWQF award, so the're still at 5 of each.

It's first flight was at one of our NIRA launches. I witnessed it. It did about the same thing it did at the NARAM sport range. Not exactly unstable, but definitely not stable either. And like the Battlestar, any stability it had was in one dimension and not the other.

Absolutely NO reason that Adam couldn't have put plastic fins on this model. No clue why he didn't. That's just Adam. 4 big clear lexan fins and the thing would hav been fine. And not needed half a ton of lead nose weight, making it grossly underpowered.

The one he entered weighed TWICE what the one he sport flew. Barely under the 3.3# limit ready to go.

Krista made the right call. At NARAM-38 we had several fires on that field due to models crashing in the dry grass. Plus one caused by an M "firestar" type motor at the end of the week. I wouldnt say we were lucky this time, but rather that we were more careful. 2 indian pumps and several water extinguishers were on the range all week.
