Airfix VJ Day set.

I went down to my local hobby store today and bought the newly released Airfix VJ Day set. Nine OOP kits, ten pots of paint, glue and a brush for 25 smackers! So, OK the kits are old. So what if the tooling has seen better days. Who cares that there are better examples out there of the craft represented in this set. I'm happy. I'm currently building the Zero, and the last time I built that kit, it came in a bag! At the end of the day, isn't building models to make you happy what the hobby is all about?

Bliss.

Well, sort of. Just building any ol' kit usually doesn't bring bliss, frequently just the opposite. The happiness depends in no small measure on the result obtained for the effort expended. Newer stuff generally gives a better result for the same effort.

Your situation sounds more like nostalgia is what makes you happy, rather than model building. That's fine, but it is a different situation than the old "Isn't building models to make you happy what the hobby is all about?" line implies.

The last time I built that one it came in an MPC box. Have a blast, sir!

I agree that nostalgia plays a big part in this. The last time I built these kits (all those years ago), they were just slapped together in an hour or so, flown around the room until they broke and then discarded. This time out, I'm doing the best that my skills will allow (but still 'out the box' in this case). As for the happyness factor, this set is so cheap, I can build them for pleasure and not have to worry about the result (Competition winners they ain't).
