It comes down to horses-for-courses. British carrier design included the assumption that carriers would have to operate largely within range of land-based air assets, in defence of Empire territories: "coastal" thinking, if you like. The carrier would need to be able to survive attack from land-based bombers without a mission kill.
US thinking was naturally more "oceanic", emphasising self-sufficiency and carrying the biggest warload.
