When the first Hellcat prototypes appeared in June and July, 1942, they were unpainted. In "F6F In Action", there is a photograph of the XF6F-1 after it had been converted to the XF6F-4 in October, 1942. It is unclear whether the aircraft was still unpainted, Has anyone seen another photograph of the -4 that would shed light on this question?
