The F6F-3 Hellcat had windows in the fuselage behind the canopy. Most F6F-5s had no windows - however the very early ones did. Is there any way, apart from photographic evidence, of working out which ones had windows?
My guess would be that the early "F6F-5" was actually an F6F-3 with the windows painted over for some reason...like with the straffer B-25s with all those guns in the nose and the glazing painted over.
I'd go with photos - they don't lie. At least the ones taken before Photoshop existed don't...
