Can someone tell me which version of the Japanese Zero the pilots of the F2As and F4Fs encountered most often in the pacific? How many versions of the zero were there?

F2A probably only saw A6M2. F4F likely saw A6M2 and A6M3.

Short version Early Zero A6M1 (Pre prod) A6M2 with both a trainer and floatplane version - Early war A6M3 squared of wings - mid war A6M4 ? A6M5 most numerous mid to late war, should have been replaced or updated by then A6M6 - 7 ? A6M8 planned "heavy" version
