I think those are how they market their 89xxx series kits, which are older kits with new parts added for a short run. All of the rest of the new ones in the 35xxx series look just like the old ones.

Hi there.
I am very interested in the LRDG trucks. I did not know that Tamiya made one with a 20 mm gun on it. Is this in 1/35 scale? Is it a captured vehicle with a German 20 mm gun on it? As far as I know the only LRDG truck used by the Allies that mounted a 20 mm used a Breda gun with belt feed. I'd be very interested in seeing an image of this Tamiya kit. Do you have a link to a site where I can see this kit?
Thanks from Peter
It's a Tamiya LRDG Chevy towing an Italeri Breda 20mm.
It's a special edition with a limited run - hence the different packaging that the OP mentions.
A short run was released earlier this year and as I understand they were snapped up very quickly so you would be very lucky to find one.
Cheers,
Nigel

Hi there.
Thanks for the links. I see that the 20 mm is indeed the Italeri 20 mm Breda gun. I have that kit with the mule not horse as the box-art states. If you build this kit with a Tamiya LRDG Chevy be aware that the gun *SHOULD* be *IN* the truck bed not towed behind it. Also the gun used by the LRDG was belt fed not magazine fed as the Italeri Breda gun is. Altogether though the Italeri Breda is a very nice kit and it is easy enough to either make 20 mm ammo belts or buy them aftermarket. You also do not need to put in the #11 wireless set as the Breda armed Chevy was not a radio truck.
Thanks again and cheers from Peter
