Newsreader problems?

Aug 16, 2004 5 Replies

I am not sure if I have a problem on my computer, or if something funny is going on in newsgroups. When I first select the newsgroup 'folder' in my Netscape, it pings the news server and gets the number of new messages in each group. Then, when I select each group, it downloads the message headers for that group.

Lately the number of message headers it downloads is only a fraction of the number of new messages it said were there. That fraction is about a quarter. Today it said there were well over a hundred new messages in rms. But it only downloaded 34 headers. This seems like a very low amount of traffic for rms. Also, sometimes I have not seen my own posts, though I get email about them, indicating some people are seeing them, even if I didn't.

I am using a fairly old version of Netscape, but also have a fairly recent Mozilla, and that does the same thing.

This is likely a problem with the news server you're using (news.uswest.net ?). Contact your ISP.

Don:

How many killfiles have you got?? I too have Netscape 4.7, and I got into a similar problem some time back when one of my attempts at kill fileing some fool backfired and started rejecting all sorts of messages.

Remember that you can have multiple messages attached to only a few headers. The biggest one showing up on mine is "Highest Prices..." with 51 messages.

Aside from that there may be a hiccup in your ISP. hth

The Keeper (of too much crap!)

More than likely, it is an ISP issue (or the local outfit that your ISP farmed its work to).

For example, I have EarthLink dial-up. Several times in the past couple of months, I have tried to access UseNet, only to get an error message saying that access to the EarthLink news server is for EarthLink customers only. I was understandibly upset, at their failure to recognize me.

However it seems, that it was the local "access number guys", who were assigning dynamic IP addresses, which were *not* from blocks reserved for EarthLink customers. So, I was naturally not seen as a loyal EarthLink subscriber.

The point? It is most likely an issue outside your computer....
