OT- newsreader problems

I am having a problem getting all the messages from newsgroups. Since this is the group I value the most, I'll ask for help here.

I use both Netscape and Mozilla- both have the same problem. I tried a portable that I had never used for newsgroups before, fearing my desktop had a virus, but it does the same thing. I complained to my ISP, but they found no problem.

When I first select the newsgroup folder, the program goes out and reports how many new messages in each subscribed group. When I select each group, it downloads the 'new' headers. But, it returns only a small fraction of the message headers it originally said were new. For instance, it may initially say there are 200 messages new, but when I click on rms, it returns maybe 25 headers. I fear I am missing most of the messages :-(

Anyone else ever hear of a similar problem? I know some will suggest I try another newsreader, but since the same thing happens on two different ones now, I am hesitant to. I still think it is the ISP problem- what do you guys think?

That's how mine works when I click on "download all." There is a "button" you click that says "more" to finish downloading all the messages. If your's is only loading 25 at a time you may have to download several times to get them all. hth

I see this happen on my systems as well. In my case, the difference between initial report and actual number of articles is that articles can be cancelled (e.g. when an article is spam), which means it won't show up in the list but still takes up an article ID number (which is what the initial report is based on). So I don't miss any real articles. You could check with Google Groups or on another news server if you think you're not getting all articles.

I found this same thing happening in July and August here; I log onto my home IPS's account as the news server here on campus died a couple years ago and they're not replacing it... When I tried to get messages, Netscape reported, say 16,000 messages were new. When I chose to 'get more messages', it would download

100-200 and stop. I had to keep selecting 'get more messages' from the "File" pulldown (Netscape 7.02) to get caught-up; very tedious. Now, if I'm logged on as I am now and my computer should stroke-out (as it is well known to do), I have to go through the same procedure again. I'd say the problem lies with the ISP but it's further upriver. This same things has happened over the past four Summers and I fight with the server to get messages. After a few weeks, the bubble seems to pass and all's well with the world again...

Check the settings you have in Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings and also remember that filters come into play here too. If you have for example 'Dubya' filtered out and 50 msgs come across w/ 'Dubya' in the subject (if thats what you filtered on) then you'll not DL those 50. Do a File, Compact Folders too. About 6 months ago things started acting woerd and I did a Compress - no more bad juju!

Since this is occurring w/ 2 readers its likely your ISP is having a problem(s) and not retaining msgs long enough for you to DL them. They may have a disk space problem. I had that problem years ago with a local dial-up ISP. Yeah, I know, NS and Mozilla are the same..... FWIW, I use NS 7.2. And FWIW, I average around 75+ msgs a day in this NG.

When all else fails, unsubscribe from ALL newsgroups, cold boot and resubscribe. Worked for me > I am having a problem getting all the messages from newsgroups. Since

get the rest, you need to download repeatly (Click on Tools/Get Next 30 headers in the QE menus). In OE, you can change the number of headers to download by going to Tools/Options/Read and changing the value. I have set mine to 600.

I suspect that Netscape/Mozilla have a similar system. That is, to get more that 25 headers, you need to download a number of times (not sure what the menu option would be). I also suspect that you can change the value in the Netscape/Mozilla configuration.
