OT: British Sub Runs Aground

story title is not as bad as it turned out to be, but what usually happens to the captain in these situations? Fairly sure this is not a good thing for their career?

I recall the USS Enterprise running aground in SF Bay years back, a real career buster. Must be a bitch trying to figure out where the bottom is in the always changing bay.

Sub has been successfully refloated. The MoD are trying to play it down as a minor incident but backsides will be kicked.

Usually, the Captain ends up being relieved of command, which effectively ends his career and renders him ineligible for another command. As to the SF Bay incident, that's why there are Harbor Pilots, whose job it is to know of any changes to their respective harbors.

One of the possible missions for this new class nuclear sub is stated to be to land a special forces team on enemy shores. Seems to me this is a very foolhardy mission. The force will be too small to do anything significant including not carrying enough explosives to blow up high value targets. That is it will likely be a suicide mission for little gain. It will also alert the enemy that in the absence of an air attack and since the coast is nearby there is a very juicy target of a nuclear British submarine to be sunk

Forgot who the CNO was in the 80s who DID run his ship aground when he was OOD. Back when he was wet behind the ears. Its not always a career ender, but probably depends on when, where, and how old you are.

In sight of the beaches of Waikiki is not a bright move. Ditto anyplace where 'Stupid Amerikanski Ship Drivers' is a headline day after day in the local paper.
