OT: Jet Pilot movie w/John Wayne

caught the last 30 minutes on AMC this weekend. What a terrible, laughable movie. What were they thinking? The ejection seat bit was hilarious.

Was that the one with the Bell X-1 painted up as a Soviet aircraft?

yes, but it and the B-29 were void of markings.

was that a Russian "P-80" shooting down the Mig?

When this movie was finished Howard Hughes was so disappointed that it set on the shelf unreleased for years. In-fact I'm not sure if it was ever released while he was still in a good state of mind. It is quite a hokey film, but is good for laughs on a sunday afternoon.

There's some good air to air of F-86's, though. I understand that Chuck Yeager was flying one of them.

I found the storyline impossible but I concentrate on the early '50s aircraft. It's great to see them flying. As I recall, the story was lifted from "Ninotchka" with Garbo playing the Russian woman. I think I saw it once and it was probably more believable than "Jet Pilot".

It's great with the sound turned off.

There have been lots of movies with "Russian" aircraft. My favorite was a made made for tv story about an airliner crashed on a beach with the occasional "Russian" de Haviland Vampire dropping in to visit.

How about the grey F-84F's as MiG-15's? Wasn't that "The Hunters?" Those were probably Hollywood's closest matches, I think.

I know they were used in "Sabre Jet" or a similar title. Maybe one of the movies with F9Fs, "Men of the Fighting Lady" or "The bridges at Toko Ri" as well.

My nomination for the worst aviation movie of all time!

Sounds like "Kamchatka Incident" with John Forsythe as the pilot of the airliner. That one had me running for a map to find this Kamchatka place. I still remember that movie when I look at a map.

Yes, definitely in that one. I have a copy thanks to one of our colleagues here. There was a lot more to that movie than I remembered.

I admit it's pretty God-awful but my nod goes to Charleton Heston's "Midway" as the major stinker!
