Take two! After 29 days of dredging, the USS Intrepid is underway, being towed down the Hudson to Bayonne NJ for a 2 year, $20m overhaul. $40m is also being spent to rebuild Pier 86 where she has sat for 20 years.
i turned down a visit when i was in ct. in september. it was a choice between her or the danbury rr museum. i picked the rr museum thinking the intrepid would be next year. oops.
My mom did when she and Dad went to New York. Dad stayed downstairs in the lobby. Must be a family thing as I didn't go up to the top of the Washington Monument when I went on the senior trip. Funny, I had no problem going up in a plane but tall buildings? Eh, no thanks.
My wife is terrified of heights. She tolerates flying, but the third step of the ladder is a major effort. It's a vision thing.
She certainly does surprise us, though. For a benchmark birthday she walked the length of the Golden Gate Bridge. At an airshow in Half Moon Bay where I was ramp boss I was rewarded with an hour in a PT-19 shooting the numbers. Upon return she asked "When is it my turn?" I think that she was kidding, but we we bustled her nto a coat, leather helmet and goggles before she could do anything and off she went. She was OK until he dropped down to kiss the numbers and up again> She thought the flight was over and crinkled the framework holding on so tight!
For some reason havn't been able to get her up in the B-17, B-24 or the Yak yet. :-)
I'm the same way - I absolutely dread the annual cleaning of the rain gutters on our 2-story home for this very reason. My entire time on the roof I am very ill-at-ease, YET I can take a Cessna 172 ride with a pilot friend of mine and he can chuck that thing all over the sky and it doesn't bother me in the least.
