Re: Need some Help finding 1/35 German Railway Cars

Carl, are these meant for running trains or just static models? The closest running trains I know of are Standard Gauge and they're around

1/32 scale.

Yes Bill , I want these Train Cars or a Static display only. For a Diorama that I have always wanted to work on.

One of my favorite Monster Movies from the 50's is ''THEM'' the Black

-&- White movie with the Giant Ants. There is one scene in the movie where a Freight Car full of Sugar has been ripped apart and the ''Ants'' have made off with almost all of the Pallets with Bags of Sugar in the Box Car. That's why I wanted to Know if the 1/35 scale Gondola could be turned into a half way decent looking Box Car.

So that is what I am looking to do with these German Railway Cars. I've got about Nine of those big ''ANT'' models and want to see how they would look dragging skids out of that Freight Car. The ANTS do seem to be really close to the size needed to make it all work in a 1/35 scale setting.

Does anyone have any of the Rail Cars that they would be willing to let my have for this Neat little Diorama I want to do.

Thanks again very much and I hope that someone out there will be able to Help.

One of the joys of a large scale like that would be the ability to scratchbuild a boxcar on the gondola chassis. Prior to the 1920s most boxcars were built largely of wood. I might have some plans in my files if you decide to try that.

Guess that I never really thought of making one from scratch. But it just sounds like a really great thing to Do.

If somebody could be able to find the plans for a ''Wooden'' sided -Box Car- along -Flat Car-. Would it be a lot of work to scale these up for

1/35. That would be just great if someone could.

Yeah a regular generic ''Wood Sided'' Box Car and an -Old Style- ''Flat Car''. They would be Perfect for the Diorama with the "BIG-ANTS" that I want to do.

Think that you might be able to find one for me then.

Thanks Again

Carl, I'll look in my files. I tend to keep odd things. :)

Carl,

There used to be sets of HO cars that you build from balsa sized to represent scale 2 x 6s etc. They gave you a drawing which you positioned two thin strips of double face tape vertically on the drawing. This held the pieces in place as they were glued together and then had the outside braces glued in place. The balsa was strengthened with a mix of shellac and alcohol before assembly. When the side was done it was carefully peeled of the tape strips. Makes a very realistic car - and will lend itself to being ripped apart realisticly, or just build up from broken sections in the first place. Many pre-1950s box cars were built of wood this way.

You were looking for German cars. These have a totally different truck and coupler structure than American Cars. If you're doing LA as in THEM you may consider working toy trucks and couplers and build up in the manner suggested above. There are 1/32 trains available.

the NYC boxcar is 1/32 and doesn't have the funky european

2 wheel trucks underneath.

Lot less work here than scratchbuilding, and the details on MTH stuff isn't as toylike as LGB and other G Gauge lines.

You can buy just the rail, cut some wood ties to scale and spike the rail in rather than using the premade track
