Need to do the rust streaks on my 1/72 U-boat. Anyone got any tips or tricks on the best way to do these realistically? I mainly do 1/48 aircraft, which tend to have panel lines and a few fluid leaks, so anything you armour, railway or ship guys (and gals) can suggest is much appreciated.
I would try this way: once you detected an ideal starting point for the rust stain, put a small amount of brownish-red artist oil color with a toothpick or a small brush tip. Let it dry some moments, time depends on paint used. With a small pointed brush dipped in turpentine (or thinner suitable to the paint used) work the rust stain, starting from the paint spot downwards in your case.
For a dried salt water stain, I would try very diluted matt acrylic white paint (or light gray). Thin it with water, don't use windshield fluid, alcool or any thinner that will break surface tenzion. Flood the spot you want to stain with thinned paint, let it dry and the pigment will build up on the stain edges, leaving a lighr stain with marked borders.
Naturally test those technics on an hidden point or scrap parts, to find if they work for you.
