I'm looking for a definitive source for consumer product design, (such items as seating) that might shed some light on guidelines used in industry for human use safety factors.

One easy source is to just call insurance companies that do product liability insurance and start asking questions.
Insurers are the LAST group you want to PO, if you expect to stay in business.

You might check some texts on ergonomics, and look in the references and index for listed standards.
