I'm looking for a definitive source for consumer product design, (such items as seating) that might shed some light on guidelines used in industry for human use safety factors.

Hre is the site for the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations for British Columbia.
Your local state or province may have a similar one.

One easy source is to just call insurance companies that do product liability insurance and start asking questions.
Insurers are the LAST group you want to PO, if you expect to stay in business.
