Good to go with SWX2005?

There are several issues, but none that are stopping me - I'm using it. Do a Google search on this group for 2005 and read. The best advice is to copy some of your typical drawings, parts & assy's and try to open them with

If you use of lot of weldments I would hold off using it - there are some major show stoppers with weldments at the moment.

If you don't use weldments it seems to be OK - some nice new features.

As far as stability, this release not too shabby. Some days I have several crashes (almost always when saving), MOST days like today.. none.

Like any release, be prepared to fix a bunch of errors that will show up in your assemblies and parts when saved in the new version.

There are definitely bugs, but (for me) they are annoyances rather than show stopping problems.

Waiting for SP1 or 2 is my recommendation. SP3 has been too long a wait looking back at the last couple of releases.

Yeah, hopefully things will calm down around sp2? SW2005 sp0.0, for all the new stuff (and some of it is very good) is a very good release overall.

Thanks Paul. I've been contemplating my next project. I want to take advantage of the new surfacing/spline features in 2005 and do another "Fun with surfaces" model. I also want to do something with the new Animator and PhotoWorks features.

We are still waiting. To many hot jobs right now to totally undergo retraining. Also waiting for SP1 so that XP SP2 can be installed first.

We had to upgrade because we purchased a new seat and couldn't purchase a 2004 seat so just upgraded all seats.

We're rather disappointed in 2005 so far. We've had multiple printing issues-our titleblock prints very thick unless you select "convert draft quality views to high quality", weld callouts look terrible, lineweights don't show up when printing, especially pdfs. Something is wrong with reference holenotes, the spacing is off so the parentheses overlap the text. Feature control frames attached to holenotes on broken views disappear (I know that one's gonna bite me one day when I open a drawing and don't notice that the frame is gone before I print it). No show stoppers, but printing issues are especially bad since we do everything from prints and that's what everyone else in the company sees. It's especially frustrating when things that used to work fine are now broken. I haven't seen any other complaints here on the newsgroup, though, so maybe it's just us. (Yes, we turned off antivirus when installing).

Anyway, I would hold off until a later service pack before "upgrading".

Printing!!! Seems like one of the more fundamental features of virtually ALL software. Yet SW has been around for going on 10 years now and has NEVER been able to get it right.

So far, every major initial release has had significant problems with printing. After about 1 or 2 service packs, they will get it PARTIALLY fixed. By that I mean that you will be able to print, but you may have to jump through hoops to get it done.

Sorry for the rant. Things usually don't bother me too much, but this one gets under my skin.

Not to worry, Version 2006 will be released just prior to 2005 becoming stable. 2006 SP3.0 will be decent, SP4.0 will be pulled because of problems, SP4.1 will fix some of the problems created in SP4.0 and SP5.0 will be ready for production use. Same old, same old
