Is there a function that will run a macro when I hit save or close the document?

You could develop a VB macro or add-in that would detect those events. The macro would have to be running already to catch the event. Other than that, no. Perhaps someone has an add-in that could run another macro for you.
It can be done with a macro alone but it is unreliable wether it is running or not. If done in an addin it will be much more reliable.
