PDM software on Novell servers?

We are currently using SW2004 in our design & engineering depts, and are committed to a PDM/EDM solution in the very near future. PDMWorks is the likely (obvious?) choice. We have a varied mix of legacy data, both 2D/3D CAD, various flavours of CAM and others. We also run Novell servers here, and as a result, look like being forced down the MS Windows Server route with all the additional costs which this entails. In a previous firm we used Cyco "Automanager Workflow" software for our mainly Autocad-based design dept, but the current versions of this seem to require Windows Server/Adv Server now too. Are there really no alternatives to the Microsoft route? Any opinions greatly appreciated.

JB:

The executables for the vault have to be run on a MS box, but the vault data area can be anywhere where files are stored and the pdmw process can be run from an an account that has full permissions on the vault data area drive. The executables really don't need to be backed up, since there is no new data created there, but the vault data should be.

SolidWorks doesn't officially support this technique because they don't test on other OSs (Novell, Linux, Unix, Vax, Mac, programmable toaster ovens, etc.), but I know that the Novell cross platform install does work, having set one or two up.

Many thanks Matt. I hadn't thought of that method of installation. Must do more reading! cheers, JB

JB: We currenly run on a Novell network and I have nothing but problems. I have heard horror stories with PDM works and Novell.

I feel that we are better off without the PDM until we get the Win2000 Server up and running.

Yeah, I don't doubt that. I don't know enough about Novell to say just where the problems are with it, but most of my "network problem children" use Novell. You can't tell an IT person that Novell is the source of the problem, because it's probably also the source of their job security.
