Phillipe,
We use Red Hat and Samba for our file server. Seems to be faster than Windows, and is certainly alot easier to maintain.

I use Mandrake without problems. I also use SUSE Linux (Novell) without problems.
Fast and stable and much easier to configure than Windows.

Phillippe,
Watch out if you have a PDM system that changes file permissions. Linux uses Unix type ownership and it doesn't allow you to give them up to someone else via standard Windows permissions.
PDM needed file server to be windows type OS. Never got it to work. Was easier just using Windows across the board.
Other than this show stopper it appeared to work okay.

Latest version of Samba uses ACL's as per windows 2003 - should work fine. I am using SME server, and all windows programs save and open files fine - even with wierd permissions. File synch works, too!
