No. Big railroads use 2 man crews, an engineer and a conductor.. My local shortline uses one engineer on the train, and the conductor follows the train in a car. On the big railroads all operating employees are qualified as both engineer and conductor.
This strikes me as a more expensive thing to do rather than have both crew members on the train. Any idea why this shortline does this?
Possible because it makes operation of ungated grade crossings, turnouts etc easier because the engineer doesn't need to stop while he operates them?
