The new 2008 Model Railroad Planning booklet has an article about modeling an HO steel mill in 4 x 8 feet, and provides some good references. One is to Mike Rabbitt who offers a number of detailed plans for steel making facilities. Googling, I found a good site at

The guy who made the definitive models of steel mills was Dean Freytag. (Walther's models of a few years ago were his designs.) Don't know exactly where to find his plans, but if you can, that's what you want.

Perhaps he did a book for the NMRA, but the more available book is the one he wrote for Walthers who in turn published it as the reference for their HO steel mill kits. This book is "The History, Making and Modeling of Steel" by Dean Freytag, copyright 1995 by Wm. K Walthers, ISBN 0-941952-46-0. Mr. Freytag includes a reference and reading list at the back of the book, wherein he mentions several of his articles in the model press, but he makes no mention of a book for the NMRA. Geezer
A little reseach would show that the NMRA recived permssion and reprinted this book.
It is indead sold out at the NMRA Kalmbach Library
You might want to vist the library page to see what else is availible. Books are sold to non-members at a slightly higher price.
