In a dual-lamp E unit with a Mars Light on the top, which would be appropriate to be turned on in forward, and which in reverse? Would it be prototypical to have either lamp on at all times?

The Mars light would be on when moving in a forward direction on the road, with a train. Since its purpose is as a warning device, it would probably be off for reverse moves and engine yard moves. However, practice varies from railroad to railroad. Generally, the lower light
- a normal headlight, would be on at all times, though dimmed in reverse and while standing. Again, practice varies from road to road. See the railroad rule book for specifics... :-)
