film model seeker in washington dc usa wowed by responses

wow all, thanks for all the interesting responses, especially the ones that directed me toward the clubs in my area. in the end we decided to make our own so as to get just what we need and after pricing things at a local shop realized this was the way to go. please forgive what seems to have been perceived as arrogance as it stems from inexperience in the computer group world. i'm really a pencil and paper sort and only in the last few years did i break down and get one of these machines and it has been useful. what ever the format i'm prone to error and omission so i apologize.

please let me add that while i am a citizen of the u.s. i prefer to think of myself as an earthling and feel disheartened when i look around the world and see the pain and suffering we humans can generate and endure. i am interested and puzzled by the nature that allows us to strive for peaceful ideals and beauty and yet participate in or tolerate actions and endeavors that result in so much misery. when i was growing up in the sixties i thought the trend was toward enlightenment and harmony and that we were on the verge of a new and peaceful world having realized the error of our ways in vietnam.

i still believe in this trend. i'm just not so sure about the time frame. eventually we will realize what it is in our natures that allows us to be so wasteful of our time and energy and each other. until then i prefer to be optimistic and humbly do what i can in my little corner to share love and kindness and hope that somehow it may spread.

we can be productive without making a huge mess of this world and there can be tolerance and peace. there may be a time when we realize our great fortune to exist and draw breath on this little planet in a vast and cold universe. the ability to communicate directly with each other through the world wide web is a likely way to circumvent the cranky old men in governments around the world whose fearful memories allow them to act with a harshness that typically results in the continuation fear and misunderstanding.

so if we could just stop with the weapons large and small and pick up a book or go online and talk or help a neighbor or write a letter to some power broker our species still may have a chance for peace.

thanks, ben

No need to apologise Ben. I regret using the word arrogance.

I hope that the TV thing goes well for you. We don't get anything like that down here. In Australia, rail modellers are generally perceived to be a bit ... strange.

What word did you wish you used?

Mark,

I really didn't explain myself very well at all. What I meant was that I regret making the comment at all, because it was wrongly construed as being specifically directed at Ben.

It was in fact intended to be a more general statement. The tendency for some US citizens to (intentionally or inadvertantly) behave as though the rest of the world does not exist, or the rest of the world thinks as they do, etc, is often so presumptive as to be offensive.

Your own reply to my post illustrates the sort of presumptiveness that I refer to. You said "The phone number 202-352-3552 should have pinpointed it enough to make your question uncessary." Please explain to me why an Australian "should have pinpointed" this as a phone number in the USA. After all, as anyone who watches American television knows, all USA phone numbers start with "555".

Regards, Ron

If you really cared about Ben's location a very simple Google or Yahoo search of "phone code 202" "area code 202" "phone area 202" or something similar would have pinpointed Ben's location enough to make your question unnecessary, instead of spending time writing on and on about extreme arrogance.

It would have been more appropriate of Ben to ask the question stating that he was in Washington, DC. Rather than expecting the people he was asking for help, to do legwork to see if they were close enough to assist him with his request.

There's no doubt about that.

Ben did follow-up with a second message stating his location, which was posted just about the time the "extreme arrogance" accusations started to fly.

I am aware of that.

Then you _must_ be aware that he made a simple mistake, and it was not a blatant attempt at _expecting_ people to do legwork to see if they were close enough to assist him with his request.

You must be aware that I said 'It would have been more appropriate of Ben to ask the question stating that he was in Washington, DC.'

Brian Smith spake thus:

You are apparently unaware that his 2nd message, after the one with no geolocation information, had the title "model train layout for filming

4/21/06 Washinton DC area". Now, if you're going to rag on him because of a speeling error, that's another thing ...

I am aware of the fact that he posted numerous times. The discussion at hand was about the fact that the first post left out pertinent information.

If I was to rag on him for his spelling error, I would have to rag on you for your spelling error. {;^)

Brian Smith spake thus:

That wasn't an error. You appear to be humor-deficient as well.

David Nebenzahl

That's hardly the case.

How impertinent of him. Have you solved the mystery of where it is taking place yet?

Ben:

Because, as we all know, copious drug use and promiscuous sex are the roots of ALL stable societies.

The world is run by 'cranky' people who at least have a work ethic and a desire to do something besides navel-gazing.

Pardon the flamage, but I used to have some respect for the hippies and ex-hippies because of their interest in craftsmanship and folk traditions. This was before I met some. I am sick, sick, sick of the pop-culture pandering to the fictional 'Sixties generation'. Sure, I know TONS of people who grew up then to become productive citizens, but it wasn't the peace, love, and herbal products that made them that way.

Even the worst of them, though (the worst being this IDIOTIC hitchhiker I gave a ride to once...60 miles of mental nullity, utterances of 'PEACE', accompanied by appropriate hand signs, and when all was over, a girlfriend of said burnout who said 'I don't know whether to thank you or punch you in the nose') is pleasant sweetness and light compared to the moronic kids who ape the fictional Woodstock ways. Grr.

This flamage was brought to you by your friendly neighborhood Clear Channel station...bringing you one hit from each Woodstock artist, every hour...

Cordially yours: Gerard P.

Hey - could be worse; could be the all simpering - pouting - itty bitty chinbearded - Industrial "Country Music" Product Clear Channel station instead. All Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith all the time.

Easily solved with a commode diode; this simple device across your antenna leads dumps the sh-tkicker crap straight to ground. New improved cRAP Filter (tm) coming soon.

Through all the discussion about location and arrogance regarding Ben's request, eveyone seems to have overlooked what finally happened.

Ben has decided to became a model railroader. He is going to build his own layout so he can have just what he wants for his film.

Hooray for Ben.

Steve:

I must build one of these right away. Let me see...it's like an old galena-crystal detector, right? You take a flake of dried horse manure, ground it to a hundred-dollar bill, and move a single whisker from one of said musicians around the surface until the P-N junction is formed?

Cordially yours: Gerard P.
