Your handle would seem to indicate that you are a troll, but just in case you are actually serious I'll respond to your questions.

I've described this item as accurately as possible, to the best of my knowledge. If I've made a mistake in my description, it would be much more constructive, and better received, for you to help me correct it than to accuse me of being dishonest.

Those engines were marketed by Atlas back in the early 70's. The big problem was the light weight and small motor that was prone to burning out. Both the 4-6-2 and the 2-8-2 were so light they really cound not pull very well. IIRC, they were in the $23 - $30 range back then. A few months ago, someone had 'cases' of them and was selling them on eBay 'by the pound'. One can still get Kato 2-8-2's for about $100(just saw one at a train show this past weekend) discounted - A much better engine.

------------------------------------------------------ Walt, these are old locomotives that were made in 1969 (the early days of N scale). They were made by Rivarossi for Atlas around 1969. The mold work is very good but the motors in the early Atlas Rivarossi steam (and Diesel) locomotives usually lasted only a few hours.

What you have would be of interest to a collector of old N scale or someone that wants to re-motor it. You might keep an eye on e-Bay and James J. Reeves Auctions to help determine the value.

The 2-8-2 might make a good basis for an HOe/HOn2.5 loco? - there would be lots of opportunity to add weight. Train length is shorter than N scale so it wouldn't be greatly loaded.

Agreed. It is NOT worthless. I have two Pacifics that still do OK. Of course they are NO match for the Kato Mikado but these are N scale history. And collectible. If it is all there, running, with NO broken steps or anything (common problem) then $50 is fair. It would have to have the original case, though.
