To control switch machines and an Atlas HO turntable.

I'll second that for the turntable. If you can, build a capacitive discharge unit for the switch machine. Those solenoid-type machine can suck up to 10 amperes momentarily. That's a lot to ask over time of a pack that's rated for 1 or 2 amps.
