Re: UP Red

Be careful here........they may just have a copyright on that particular shade of red. HZ

Really? On the Floquil color charts I see UP Armour Yellow, UP Harbor Gray, and UP Light Orange. What's the big deal about red?

Re HZ's response - better check both legs are still the same length.

As for red's, I just use caboose red - Floquil or Scalecoat. It may not be precisely the same red as the decal reds or the UP's color drift cards, but then the decals aren't precisely the same either, and I can't see the difference when I mix Champ and Microscale to get the lettering right. The real color issues are the large area colors, the gray and yellow, not the little bit of red on narrow lettering and stripes. Gary Q

Every UP F unit I recall had a gray roof (yellow over the cab on A-units) outlined with a red stripe. Can you provide a link to the prototype photo of the F with an all red roof? Gary Q

You're right. I used the F7 as an example so Trevor could research the red paint color they used for the lettering. What I'm trying to do is paint a UP caboose that is yellow with a red roof and railings.

Terry Metcalf's data lists that the roof and end ladders/railings were not the same color. The ladders and end railings were the same bright red used for lettering, while the roof was "freight car red", a brownish red color. Gary

Yes, the "red" used on UP caboose bodies is an oxide red. Centralia used Badger Modelflex Light Tuscan Red for their UP cabeese.

The red on handrails is a regular bright red.

Inside the rear cover of George R. Cockle's book "CA-11 Cabooses" (ISBN

0-916160-07-6 of 1979/80 ) there is a copy of an official UP painting and lettering diagram for the said cabooses (Cabeese? :-) )

This lists the following:- LETTERS AND FIGURES......Scotchlite Ruby Red Reflective Material. Union Pacific -16" lettering. UP and figures - 14" lettering #29 Red stencil paint for all other markings. BODY, SIDES & ENDS.........Armour yellow. UNDERFRAME & TRUCKS....Black ROOF...................................Red freight car SAFETY APPLIANCES..........Red enamel. Platform railing Hand brake Handholds INTERIOR.............................Light green.

---------------------------------------------------------

The colour photo on the cover clearly shows that the safety appliance red enamel matches the Scotchlite Ruby Red in being a bright red.

This photo does not show the roof, being taken from ground level but other photos I have seen and other references to "red freight car" by UP clearly indicate that that colour is good old "Box car red" a very brownish shade.

There are several photos of varius UP cabooses in the two volumes of Morning Sun Book's "UP Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment".

Earlier models where the side lettering was painted rather than Scotchlite show the colour to be similar. Again roofs are boxcar red though there are 3 photos of wooden CA1 cars where the roofs are also Armour Yellow. I have never seen any pictures of metal cabooses with yellow roofs.

Hope this helps.
