Walthers turntable.

Anyone had any experience with the new turntable from Walthers? They are due out about now...I think, or are they out in some areas and not in others?? Thanks......any comments would be appreciated. I'm trying to decide whether to build the Custom Model Railroad (CMR) table or use the Walthers unit......or attempt a scratchbuild. HZ

Hi Bruce - I would be keen to receive images of your budget TT! If you can, please email them to me - remove the obvious bits of the email.

Thanks

Steve

"Bruce Favinger" wrote in message news:_pzTd.57278$ snipped-for-privacy@newssvr30.news.prodigy.com... Howard, Last year I built a rude and crude TT contraption for almost nothing. The crude part of the TT is out of sight so the bridge and pit can be any size and as detailed as a guy wants. Its very easy to build, line up and is as tough as nails. Its the kind of thing anyone with a ruler and pencil can make. There is some fiddling to do getting the pit rail and the bridge trucks set just right. A little tedious but not difficult. The best part is that it works flawlessly. Even so it would not be suitable for every layout because it uses a nasty old second hand Atlas unit to drive it. Though subdued by the housing the old Atlas makes some noise that might be objectionable too. Even if suitable it might be an embarrassment if anyone saw it from under the bench work. I did not want to spend much money on a TT but a realistic appearance and absolute reliability were the most important things. Having seen pictures of your layout and the high caliber of your modeling I can't imagine anything like this would be found lurking under your scenery and you probably need a more sophisticated indexing capability anyway. But I took some pictures of it as I built it, so if you decide to scratch build your TT and think there's a chance it might help drop me an email. Bruce

Bruce, Yes....I would be most definitely interested in seeing photos of your tuntable, as it seems that others would as well. I do have the complete kit from CMR, but after assembling a Diamond Scale kit years ago......'been a bit reluctant to build a TT kit again. In kit building, I just do not have the patience anymore to try and figure out what the kit manufacturer is trying to say. Interesting note about the Diamond scale turtable I had built..... I was not to happy with it so I took it to our first Great Scale Model Train Show in 1982 (Ellicott City Armory) and sold it for $140 (offer made to me)before the show opened. An hour later a gentleman comes up to my table just as the show begins and asks me if I would trade my PFM Ma & Pa #26 for a turntable he had in his car. I said I would look at it.....it was the exact turntable by Diamond Scale model I had just sold....only ten times better. I agreed to the trade as I had an $85 price tag on the brass consolidation. (This is one of the reasons I love train shows!!!) That same table is still on my layout and can be seen in both Allen Keller videos. We may have a Chinese pope before Walthers finally delivers their turntable...I was hoping someone knew more about the status of it. Walthers keeps delaying the due date......but from photos and rumors, it looks and sounds absolutely great!!! Will it work well???????? Another question of great interest!! I greatly look forward to seeing your photos and information on your model... Many thanks, HZ

Howard, No comments on turntables (mine is a long OOPs kit) but I can recommend a controller. The PTC controller is the Mercedes of controllers. A bit pricey but probably the best on the market.

Bruce, You can post your model railroad related photos to alt.binaries.pictures.rail. Just remember to properly label them on a.b.p.r, then post here to direct people to them.

Bruce, Thanks for the photos. You obviously are a master craftsperson! I just learned that Tommy Gilbert of hobby shop of same name out of Gettysburg, PA offered to bring down a new Walthers turntable towards the end of this week for a tryout. If that does not work well, I'd be most interested to learn more about your construction techniques as they appear rather impressive...to say the least!! Thanks again and keep up the fine work! HZ

Bruce, I will not pull any punches on this one.........I'll be glad to post my opinions...but remember, they will be just that....opinions!! I have heard from several sources just the opposite. Much work and fine design engineering have gone into this critter!! Walthers has been doing some mighty fine projects and credit where it is due. Their "Cornerstone" kits are of superb design....quality??? I come from a different discipline, so I'm not really qualified to comment. I'm quite impressed with their new heavyweight passenger cars. I have over a dozen and in one train. They go where most if not all of my expensive brass counterparts will not....and without triangulation (loosening one truck only). They have put me out of the small scratchbuilt structure business with their "ready to plant" structures.....but that is the way of it sometimes. I have nothing but respect for their current projects. I greatly look forward to seeing this turntable operate.....as are my electrical folks. (I'm not allowed below the bench..except to sweep and fasten scenery) HZ

Howard, Please post in plain text, or if nothing else, please don't use such a hard to read font. Your posts are running up to 21 Kb because of the html. Those that don't live in the USA that have to pay by the minute or by the byte don't need this, and wasting bandwidth on frivolous features will not help keep this group on ever-increasing cost-conscious ISP's.

Thank you.
