I am progressing well with the M-S, discovering that the mag throws a huge spark and I'm not going to tempt fate by fiddling with it. Whilst cleaning
60 years of corrosion s**te off the aluminium, I found a timing mark on the mag drive housing and a crudely cut chisel mark on the mag body, so I at least now have a reference to start from.They may well have been an early APU, probably from an Ensign civil airliner, but I must say they show little sign of any aeronautical-standard design or workmanship. The crankcase casting is sand cast and not especially well fettled, the magneto fitting is whimsical, the cowled cooling air supply has been modified by a rather crudely-made extra cowling that directs air across the carb and a much more nicely made device applies pressure to the cylinder head by a solid - and specially made - steel beam. All the components that make up this load spreader are made by hand and there are still scribing marks to be seen in certain lights.
Once again, I am struck by the speed at which information has vanished. This engine was made circa 1935, only seventy well recorded and documented years ago and despite being equipped with wit and Internet access, neither Nick Highfield nor myself can find out much about them or their designer. I could tell you more about the life of Paneb, a stone mason working in the Valley of the Kings 3,000 years ago, than I can about the man who designed this curious little engine!
If all goes well, I might even try to get it running today ;o))
