It seems to be electrical night so - I've got three BIG (10") meters that read in kilovolts - really useful on site .........
But could I run the HT from a plug lead through one? I take it the instrument would not complain, but would the plug spark do you think?

But may well not give a sensible reading due to the very short duration of the spark and the inertia of a big pointer.
Not if series connected, try parallel ie plug lead to chassis.
They are more than likely AC voltage which at best would only give a flick up and also to get them to read kV correctly they would need a voltage transformer.
