One problem being that this NG often 'previews' material sent to SEM. I have just submitted stories on the Inglis charging set and Kubota KND3 (assuming email comms to Kelsey acres are working at the moment!) much of which will be familiar, while a goodly chunk of your Parsons article also appeared first in these parts.

Personally I would rather toss things about in an informal manner here (often garnering useful additional info) and then work them up into a proper article later. To my mind what is really needed is a decent 'Engines on the Internet' article and no, I'm not volunteering!

I assume our interest is in increasing the activity by volume & variety on the NG.

Do we know whether GW would welcome this initiative? My feelings to date are that Kelsey (and/or GW) perceive the Web as more of a threat than a blessing -- a view we would not agree with.

Those who read the US NG will know that a Brit does a similar monthly task & compiles an article for GEM. This usually picks up one or more NG key themes of the month, & I believe both parties have gained.

If we know that the copy will be well received, I'll join the volunteers. Happy to work within editorial guidelines, assuming they don't compromise the core opinions expressed in the NG, & assuming they don't ban mention of useful sources highlighted by the NG (web or otherwise).

Well I had volunteered to do this some time ago and I have got so far as to having Part 1 almost complete however work, lighter nights and DIY have put a stop to progress unfortunately.

I have a good few ideas and have all the input from my previous postings to the NG on this topic. After Astle I will get something solid written up and get it sent in to the SEM. My idea is basically several shortish (page - 2 pages) articles over two or three months to try and capture an unbiased view of engines on the web, web in general etc. I feel it should be over a few parts to ensure a broad spectrum of topics can be covered but at the same time, those who may not be up to speed on the internet won't be overcome with jargon !! Quite a challenge, but having already done much thinking about it I am sure I can put something meaningful together. Part 1 is almost complete and I have the rest planned so hopefully this will be what SEM needs to recognise whats available on the web.

Will be at Astle if anyone wants to band a few ideas about or give me a prod to get it finished !! ;-) Regards David

Terrific! Yes, I did remember you mentioning that you would have a crack at this some time ago and I'm really pleased that you have it in hand. I must admit I had envisaged one short article listing useful internet resources, you are clearly working on something much more extensive and I look forward to reading the results. Has GW indicated an interest?
