off line? (OT)

I might be a bit quiet in the evenings for a couple of days (don't all cheer at once, I can still annoy you from work!).

Pipex has at long last decided to do something about the intermittent disconnections I have been suffering since mid July (when curiously BT re-routed a load of lines outside the house). This means I must change the log in name on the router to some sort of BT test setting and I won't be able to use it for 48 hours. Pipex seemed curiously reluctant to escalate the fault to BT wholesale - does it cost them money or something?

I think I still have a dialup connection from this lot

which sounds like some sort of con job with no subscription, local call charge only and same user name/password for everybody, but I haven't found the catch yet.

Maybe none, they will get a kickback from BT of a few fractions of a pence for every minute you are connected.

BT test came back no fault found after only a couple of hours - one would have thought they would give it a little longer given the intermittent nature of the problem. I must admit though that having left the router on all night, I didn't notice a single flicker from the sync light.

It turns out that BT do indeed charge ISP's for NFF line tests. Would it be too cynical of me to suggest that BT might simply turn up the wick a bit at the exchange (I am assuming here that maintenance of sync relies on the reception of some sort of supersonic carrier tone), hope that this masks any line problems and collects the cash?
