Re: Picture test2

Again, my server has blocked the whole post and, as Richard H. has pointed out, this is (or was) not a binary NG.

I have received all (? 3?) of Dave's pics (not going to get involved in the rights & wrongs!), *but* I had to specifically download these messages + attachments although I have Agent set to automatically download all message bodies, and, specifically, no confirmation required for jpg files.

It isn't the individual systems, Dave, it is Usenet that sets the rules and filters, so there should not be any attachments or images getting through at all, UNLESS, you can post or have posted to an individual's email address at the same time as the post going to the newsgroup.

Agent does allow this and has a window position for both. It is quite useful when posting announcements to this NG and Oldengine.org and Atis.net.

Kind regards,

Peter

While I am not certain of the size threshold it is certain that some news servers will strip out binary postings. These days most ISP's only provide access to text only groups, some have even withdrawn that. Access to binary groups usually requires the use of a specialised service or a premium level account with an ISP. What is certain, is that binary groups use vast amounts of bandwidth in comparison to text only ones, just the three you made most likely exceed the total of all bandwidth used by all other posters over the last week.

As far as I can recall until the Lister starter motor post, there had not been a graphic posted to this group for a very long time. Because I have a premium Usenet access account my concern about binary's is not for myself, but for those using services where Usenet access is poorly supported. It seems that quite a few ISP' are at best slow to act when their servers fall over, I base that statement on the many message we see here about servers playing up. I could be wrong but I would bet that accounts that provide so-called free access to Usenet will be history within two years. While the odd binary post could be seen to be harmless, if a regular user of the group is seen to be doing just, that and it is accepted without comment we should not be surprised if a total newbie without the vaguest idea of how to compress a file comes along and posts the contents of his photo album.

Interesting....I have an NTL Broadband account and access to three NTL news servers the most reliable of which in the evenings is text.news.ntlworld.com, a text only server you would think. I can however see all the binaries that have been posted including the original wanted post by C.M.Velander.

Just checked news.cache.ntlworld.com and news.cable.ntlworld.com and the post including the picture is there too.

It does indeed depend on the news server / ISP.

I can receive the pictures posted yesterday from the news server we run at work, but not from the ISP's server which I use at home. (This is the correct behavoiur. Strictly speaking, as this group is listed as a 'no binaries' group, attachments should not be transmitted - however we have a slightly more lenient policy at work).

best Matt
