Now I'm intrigued. What is that clamped around the barrel and head?

The thing clamped around the barrel is the water hopper. This design was supposedly to make the engines frost proof as the hopper would give before the cylinder. A friend of mine restored the rarer push-rod version of these. Weird little engines.
