Talking about aero engines (were we?), did you know that John Duigan who built and flew the first aeroplane built in Australia (1910) used a locally built JET engine? (Check the Subject line)
Duigan built his own wheels, radiator, propeller shaft, ball bearings, radiator, etc.

Probably being even dimmer than usual, but, though I can find a fair bit about Mr. Duigan's exploits in early aviation, I don't get the jet (or beer) connection.
