class 50 tail lights

Anyone done the hornby class 50 taillight DCC modification so you can operate the taillights independently?

If so, How do you do it?

Thanks

Mine is set up as follows with a 5 function decoder.

  1. A end taillights, operated by F0 when in reverse
  2. B end taillights, operated by F0 when in forward
  3. Fan motor, operated by F1
  4. A end headcode, operated by F2
  5. B end headcode, operated by F3

The essential work is to rearrange the LED boards at the cab bulkhead so the LEDs are connected with common anode instead of common cathiode as supplied. The Hornby main board can then be dumped and replaced by your choice of decoder. Hardest bit was to get the bulkhead LED boards out as they were fixed with a drop of supewrglue. Persistence with the end of a knife blade did the trick. Then its a matter of tracing out the circuit and seperating the negative for the red LEDs from the negative for the headcode LEDs The supply leads can then be reconnected with common positive and seperate negatives. Used a TCS A4 board replacement, sort of replaces, have the marker lights and tails on F0 and F1 with headlights working on F2 dependent on direction of travel. As mentioned earlier the Hornby circuit board is wired with common cathodes so need to rewire. The board replacement allows the four pick up wires to have a separate tag each on the decoder and potential very little soldering if you can reuse the holders.
