When I point out to certain members of my family that Coronation Street and the rest of them daft Soaps aren't real, they retort by pointing out I belong to the generation that listened to Archie Andrews, a ventriloquist, on the wireless!

I don't see a problem with that, Tommy. It was that Peter Brough I couldn't put up with. Why he always had to be on the show I never could understand... ;-)

IIRC Andrews was the dummy, not the vent! I think he was Peter Brough.

And in the US they had Edgar Bergen (father of Cand Iceberg En) with Charlie McCarthy. He later appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, and he wasn't a particularly good ventriloquist.

Mr Brough, by all accounts didn't bother on air.

Archie Andrews, IIRC, was the dummy. It was Peter Brough that was the ventriloquist. Not a very good one, from what I've heard, which is why he was on the wireless.

Thank you Dave, Martin, Geoff, John for pointing out that Peter Brough was the ventriloquist in the programme Educating Archie.

After all these years my illusions shattered:-)

However, I think Mr Brough's "vent" skills and Dapol's Pendolino both leave room for improvement.

Howzat for getting back on topic.

MartinS tortured innocent electrons to declare:

But seriously, isn't a bit sloppy? If you saw a layout which purported to be an accurate portrayal of a Manchester suburban railway (as CS is supposed to be a Manchester suburban street), wouldn't you think it a little odd if a street just cut across the railway (either above or below) with no explanation as to how it fits into the rest of the road network?

Certainly it's sloppy. IIRC the viaduct facade behind the Rovers was put up 4 or 5 years ago to hide the view of the Granada office building; it also accommodated the oft-mentioned but never seen Jackson's Chippy under a side arch. A year or two later, when the computer-enhanced opening and closing scenes were developed, they inserted a view of Rosamund Street beyond the bridge, but didn't, or weren't able to, include it in the virtual views down the back alley or from the air.

This gives me the distinct impression that you actually watch Coronation Road! I have *much* better things to do with my time, but you'd better not tell 'er next-door or she'll want to know more details...

My spouse and I do watch Coronation *Street*, although we're 9 months behind the UK timeline in Canada, and it's off for 4 weeks during the Olympics and World Cup [Ice] Hockey. :-(

From a distant memory from thirty or so years ago, that could have been the case if you modelled a Glasgow Street scene around the Charing Cross area. They built a bridge as part of the road development in the area, but didn't build anything else :-)

Maybe someone can confirm this as I've been away from Glasgow since

1980

There was indeed an elevated deck at Charing Cross, but I don't believe it was ever intended to carry a road. Rather, it was planned to build an office block on top of it. And after many years of disuse, a rather ugly office block has actually been erected on it.
