They're not popular in the UK.
I was once privileged to visit the late Colonel Hoare's famous Bromford and High Peak O-scale layout and it totally spoiled the effect.
Not to mention that the friend I had with me took his prize-winning B1 with a large Pittman motor and it couln't pull its train up it.
Fair enough. But I'd still like to consider the option.

But they are great space savers and they allow you to double back on a layout and have one board above another giving you twice the run in the same area.
If the layout is along the walls, why not have the shelves themselves "climbing"?
Made a single track for OO myself based on 3rd radius curve and cutting ply to shape and joining together. Gradient works out at 1 in 30. Commercial ones looked really expensive and more importantly did not match my requirements.
