I learnt a long long time ago that any Ebay advert which inluded the word LOOK, or even worse L@@K, was to be ignored at all costs, and that the intelligence of the writer was in inverse proportion to the number of exclamation marks used at the end of sentences.

Most of the scams existed long before Ebay came along.

That story says more about the outright stupidity of people than use of the internet. Would you cash a cheque for a total stranger (what is, in effect, happening) in that way? Unfortunately, criminals will always prey on the weak or stupid in this way, regardless of the medium. It no different to little old ladies being conned out of their lifesaving by unscrupulous tradesmen.
