Farrish

Hi, I am interested in DCC and own some Fleischmann 'n-gauge' stock. I am thinking of trying UK outline but have heard some bad things about the quality of UK outline 'n-gauge'. I'd appreciate any views before I spend too much money. I understand Graham Farrish may be a decent brand for 'n-gauge' but have not been able to find much in the way of DCC from them. Their online catalogue appears to pretty slim.

Steam or diesel ? My views below (which half the N-gaugers will not agree with).

Farish steam outline (and the 08 diesel shunter) is poor and best avoided. For DCC conversion you need to insulate the lower brush gear from the chassis block, there is an small supplier who offers such a conversion kit.

Farish bogie diesels are not too bad, though will be somewhat of a disappointment compared to your normal Fleischmann. The most recent re-introductions from the Bachmann Chinese factory are a big improvement on the previous UK made items (*). Again, you may have to do some brush gear isolation, but it will be easier.

DCC is somewhat in its infancy in the UK, whereas the DCC market is much more advanced in Germany and the USA. I expect the UK will catch onto the DCC idea soon, though N gauge will probably be the last place for the change to happen.

(* My contacts at Bachmann claim the next new Farish introductions are a big improvement on what has gone before, I will wait and see with interest - there is no reason why they cannot produce items with the detail and running qualities of typical North American model diesel locomotives. )

If you think that's slim try the others, Dapol and Peco. At this time Bachmann are not fitting their Graham Farish line with DCC you have to do it yourself after purchase.

Hi, Thanks for the prompt replies, disappointing that Farrish do not yet see DCC as a sound investment for n-gauge. Looks like I shall stick with Continental for now. Perhaps I can slip 'Cheshire Lines' into the German countryside somewhere. :-)

If you were to build a "Light Railway" then you could legitimately use any motive power including German French etc along with period wagons . most Fleischman locos run superbly same for Roco and Trix, its your railway......... :)and they all do N scale starter sets with dcc included. Beowulf

It would be a real bonus for the German countryside - improve it considerably.
