Not In My Chinese Back Yard

[Portland's effort to help homeless people by providing a place for them to store their stuff led to another problem:

The storage lockers, which opened Nov. 8, are in the Grove Hotel -- feet from the landmark gate to Chinatown at West Burnside and Southwest Fourth Avenue. That didn't sit well with Chinatown residents and Portland's Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association.

"We have some community members that are really upset that the homeless storage center was right next to the Chinatown gate because it would give others the image of being scared of going into Chinatown, and it would hurt the business there," said Rosaline Hui, editor of the Portland Chinese Times newspaper. ]
