Railfest 2004 - pictures from Sunday now on line

What an amazing day it has been with a huge display of steam, diesel and electric spanning two centuries. My heartiest congratulations to all who have contributed to this event.

Highlights were 3440 "City of Truro" working all day on the demonstration track, the Penydarren replica (you have to see it in action!), real BR steam shed atmosphere (smokin'), D9009 and 56006 both restored to original condition, APT-E looking magnificent and the brand new 171 4-car Turbostar in SR livery.

I have created a new Fotopic gallery at:

I've cross-posted this, as there is really something to suit everyone in this selection! Modeller-friendly...

The atmosphere was superb, with none of the grumpy kettle photographers who have marred some past open days. With only one or two exceptions everything was well displayed and accessable.

If you're planning to go, you may not want to view these pictures just yet...

Regards,

Nice pics.

Just one technical point, it's not two hundred years of railways but two hundred years of locomotives/powered traction.

Strictly speaking, correct, of course.

Bit of a mouthful, though, so I shall invoke the right of "artistic licence".

It is, however, 400 years of railways in .uk - so really it ought to have been railfest 400.

As you wish, but is "two hundred years of railways" really any less of a mouthfull than "hundred years of locomotives" ?

Not saying what you say is any less true, and I do accept that it is 200 years of locomotives NOT railways, but the NRM site

has "This site is part of the National Railway Museum's Railfest 2004 celebrations - commemorating

200 years of the railway. "

Visitor centres will use any excuse, the NRM is no exception. Railways are more than 200 years old and I bet NRM will be rolling out the same story in 19 years time.

Technically correct, but the 'Railways' in this case were in fact for Trams, drawn by horses, and not what we would automatically associate with the statement (Steam Engines).

leaving aside the discussion as to who is technically correct

would an incorrectly described event stop you going?

Can I be permitted to disassociate myself from the "we" above? For that matter, I'd suspect there are a few people in this 'froup who don't autmomatically associate railways with steam locomotives..

In article , old git posted at the wrong end of the message:

Nope - though pressures of time and other things to do are going to prevent me going. The weekend-away this month is already committed to the RAeS Garden Party at Shuttleworth, which I rather feel has the edge :)

Is it just me but is it all a bit sad ?

half of the images are dull , poorly lit and poorly composed . the gallery is little more than trainspotting online

Sorry

It's you.

Adam Warr has taken the time and trouble to share his photos of the event with us, and that is as close as I am going to get to being there. I look forward to seeing your gallery, Martin.

Only half? My photography must be improving! Seriously, though - just try to get a well composed shot in the available space with 20,000 folk around...

"Little more than trainspotting on line" - erm..that's the whole idea of the gallery. I think you are missing the point, Martin.

Anyway got to get my Anorak from the dry-cleaners, polish my NHS specs and dust off my ABC for the next jaunt!!
