From ground level, the most obvious differences are the more rounded ends on Mk IIs. The under-slung items are all hidden on a MkIII by side panels and are exposed on the MkIII. MkIIs are also much shorter. From above, MkIIs have predominantly smooth roofs and MkIIIs are ribbed.

Mk.IIIs are 75ft or so in length and have distinctive ribs on the roof, whereas the Mk.II is only about 64ft, and the roof is pretty much smooth. And on the WCML, at least, VT's Mk.II standard class coaches have all their seats grouped in 4s around tables, whereas the Mk.III standards have 'airline' style seats too.
