It seems like both tunnels needed to be closed due to storm damage to the signalling equipment.
John.
So why did you buy shares in it or lend them money to build it?
Erm...... Who says no one wants to do it? I cant find work like that which is why I'm stuck in a cash and carry warehouse on minimum wage being slowly bored stupid! I'll do any 'hands on work' I can find! Mike H
We are all immigrants. Some of us got here earlier, that's all.
Spot on Tim! (It's the same down here)

I think they should give up on these computer controlled systems and install absolute block with semaphore signals. :-)
In reponse to all the replies to this I think the main concern of people is that the government have lost control of the situation, they appear to be incapable of even returning those who have been found to have no right to assylum/remain here. Take the case of the whistle blower who was sacked recently, this exposed the failure of the system. The trouble is unless the government get a grip and fast we will see a rise in political parties who are extreme in their views on this issue. I think we are paying the price of electing a government that is more concerned with 'Spin' than a proper policy carried through to completion.
Just to make another point my concerns have nothing to do with race, the immigration that was encouraged in the 50's was done to meet a need in this country, and I dont have a problem with that, equally the East African Asians who came to this country during the 70's were genuine refugees, and that is fine, we did the right thing, and again I dont have a problem with it. What I do have a problem with is the large quantity of economic migrants who appear to be coming here with out control or even legally.
Final point
In order to claim assylum I thought under international law you had to claim assylum in the first safe country that you set foot in, so why do we allow anyone to claim assylum here if they have come through France (or any other EU country) Just send them straight back, no questions asked.
Mike
How enlightened.
And learn not to top post, bigot.
Most of us, anyway. I am certainly about 1/4 Irish and can trace my ancestry on my mother's side back to a Huguenot (I have an ancestor, John André, who was a spy during the American war of independence and has a statue in New York State).
I think that the country would be a lot better if all copies of the Daily Mail were forcibly repatriated to the sewer from which they emanate ;-)

The Zen Stalinist Manifesto represents the way forward on this:

I thought they already were. Which is why all that raw sewage spilled into the Thames last week and this.
Incidentally, does anyone know how much Thames water has been fined for releasing all that raw sewage into the Thames?

This is most certainly not intended as a racist comment, but simply an observation.
I cannot wholly concur with your last comment Clive. We have had significant recent crime in Hull allegedly caused by people believed to be seeking political asylum, and a fair number from those ranks have been successfully prosecuted. This has included trashing of a pub, and a number of sexual attacks. There have also been several recent attacks on immigrants by locals.
In addition to that it had recently been widely reported nationally that the number of people using cars without driving licences, insurance or road tax has been swelled by recent immigrants to the UK. Indeed an Iraqi subject was recently arrested locally for driving a car believed to be stolen which crashed killing another person from the same part of the world. It was reported that all of the people in that stolen car were illegal immigrants.
We also have a major crime problem caused by locally born people, often drug related, but I don't think it fair or reasonable to attibute all crime to the indigenous population or indeed to others.
John.

Clive is referring to the travellers at Smithy fen just outside Cottenham village just north of Cambridge. Apparently they, the travellers, have been there for a long time with no real problems, but of late there have been a lot more mainly Irish ones who have been more problematic according to the local press. It also appears that they want to expand the site.....

Hi Tony,
That certainly does not seem to correspond with what Clive wrote which was:-

Try these - not laws - but guidelines produced for some pretty good reasons if you take the trouble to read them and then consider why some visually impaired people find top-posting extremely difficult to comprehend:
Just to throw a spanner in the works, one argument FOR top-posting is to prevent having to scroll through reams of replies that have built up into one post, then the new poster says "Me too" at the bottom. Admittedly, top or bottom posting isn't strictly the problem there - the problem is lack of selective editing, and I'm sure in the good ol' days of usenet top-posting was the norm because people did edit out all but the relevant bits of text to keep things succinct, and keep bandwidth usage down.
However, as bottom-posting (there really ought to be a better name than that!) seems to have become the norm, then that's what I'll accept!
