Realistically modelling ballast

I wonder if anybody has gone that extra little bit for authenticity by modelling track/ballast as portrayed in this news article :-) Toilet waste 'hampers rail repairs'

It also puts a whole new issue on correctly "weathering" the underside of one's trains ;-)
