New hose reel

I just got a 100' oxy-acetylene hose reel for my service van. It doesn't leak & it retracts and latches well. The only problem is that is is quite noisy when driving down the road. Really noisy. It sounds like I have a couple thousand aluminum cans rattling around in the back. After showing my supplier, he agreed without a doubt that it is quite irritating. It is a Cox brand reel. The manufacturer says the rattle is the spring canister inside the reel and nothing can be done about it.



Has anyone here had luck with silencing these things?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Sounds like the reel was not intended for mobile use. I can think of three possible solutions: 1.) Fill the spring canister with grease. 2.) Remove the spring and rewind the hose by hand. 3.) Replace the spring with some kind of rubber band device that winds up.

I am not familiar with this reel, but wonder if the spring coil is simply rattling against the inside of the reel or is it rattling against itself as well. IF it is the first one *may* be able to isolate the two by wedging a piece of mat between the spring and the drum. If it can be done it should partially take care of the situation even if the coils of the spring may still slap together some.

Plan B) Remove the spring & install a small motor to spin it.

Make a cover for it - spray foam on the inside of the cover... Think bicycle fender with deeper sides.

Plan C ....... Remove the spring and install a BIG motor to spin it. No need being out there any longer than necessary.
