powdered fluxes

got my hands on some powdered flux for silver soldering/brazing. never used the powder. the coated rods have done the trick in the past.

tried it tonite with ugly results. am i supposed mix this into a paste? with water? i've tried both wet and dry to no avail. got *somewhat* better results by heating the silver and dipping into the powder .. and using it like a powdered rod. but the flux seemed to burn and turn into little brown globs.

had to really dump heat into the joint (bright red) to get the surface to wet. no "wicking" action i've become so fond of. tips?

The brazing flux I have just has you get the rod warm and dip the rod in the flux.
