trying to weld a rail for my buddys for railslide on their snowboards... its stainless pipe for the rail and galvenized for the legs they are both about the same size thinkness like abit less thjen 1/4 inch.. i tried using a AC arc welder at about 115....; i checked the legs by smacking em with a log.. eventually the welds brock and legs fell off..
someone told me i needed a Dc welder... the rod i usedd was like 3/32 or smething like that smaller than 1/8..

Rod: Dude! Grind off the galv on the galv where the weld will be. About 3/8" away should be fine. The Zinc in the galv is a contamination for the S.S. Use a 309L Stainless Steel 1/8" electrode if the S.S. is 316L or a lower 300 series S.S. DC reverse polarity only. AC is not good here, period.

Exactly what rod did you use? There are some AC stainless rods and some DC stainless rods.

i used 3/32 electrorodes red baron 309/309l... i was told from a welder that AC was fine.????

I had to do a little googling. 309-16 is a all position AC / DC rod. It is the -16 that tell whether it is a AC rod etc. It is probably the zinc that is keeping you from getting a good weld. Some acid will take it off.

thanks dan... i just ground it off with my black&decker angle grinder.. i took another stab at it today and it worked great.. turn the voltage down to
